Finland is considered the motherland of sauna. Even the word itself is probably the best known from the Finnish language. To this day, saunas are closely linked to Finnish culture, which is also evident from the fact that more than 1.5 million saunas are distributed among about 5.5 million Finns. Since 1987, the Finnish sauna has even had its own holiday - the second Saturday in June. The classic Finnish sauna is characterized mainly by very high temperatures with low humidity in the sauna cabin. Water infusions on the hot sauna stones cause the body to sweat additionally. The high temperatures strengthen the body's immune system like a fever. The pores of the skin open and toxins are sweated out. Each sauna session is followed by cooling down with cold water, such as a shower or a plunge bath. This alternation of heat and cold gets the circulation going and improves blood flow. Due to the very high temperatures, however, a Finnish sauna is not suitable for everyone. Especially people with cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure or vascular diseases should rather avoid the Finnish sauna. A bio sauna with lower temperatures or a steam bath can be an alternative.
