Infrared heating & health
Infrared heaters are becoming increasingly popular, not least thanks to rising energy prices. Low purchase costs, easy installation and no maintenance costs are increasing interest in this alternative heating solution. But when it comes to radiant heat, some of you may be a little more cautious and ask yourself whether infrared radiation is even dangerous. In this article, we show you what effects infrared heating has on your health.
Are infrared rays harmful to health?
To anticipate the answer: Infrared radiation is neither unhealthy nor dangerous - quite the opposite. An infrared heater produces infrared C-rays. These long-wave rays are similar to sunlight and penetrate only about 0.3 mm deep into the skin. Therefore, this type of radiation cannot be compared to health-threatening UV rays or X-rays, which penetrate significantly deeper layers of the skin.
Is electrosmog a problem with infrared heaters?
An infrared heater is powered by electricity and generates electrosmog like any other electrically powered device in your home. The infrared rays themselves are generated by heat, while electrosmog is based on electrical radiation. Both types of radiation are based on fundamentally different physical laws. To put it simply, electromagnetic radiation from an infrared heater is only generated in the power cable and is therefore low.
Why infrared is good for your health
We have now clarified that the radiation of an infrared heater does not endanger your health. In the following we will show you why infrared heat even has a positive effect on the indoor climate and your well-being.
Soothing infrared heat
Unlike other heating systems, an infrared heater does not heat the air in the room, but objects, walls and people in the room. The heat thus penetrates the uppermost layer of the person's skin. In this way, the blood vessels dilate so that the warmth is quickly distributed throughout the body. Muscles and tendons relax, releasing tension.
Better indoor air
Infrared heating counteracts mould growth
When the heated room air hits the walls in a classic heating system, the water contained in the air condenses and penetrates the walls. Over time, mould can form in these places, endangering your health. Infrared rays heat the walls directly so that the moisture does not condense on them and thus does not penetrate the walls. Mould has no chance to develop here.
Is infrared heating the perfect heating solution for you?
From a health point of view, heating with infrared heating is absolutely recommended for the reasons mentioned. However, it depends on the structural conditions in your home whether infrared heating is feasible as your main heating system or not. If you live in an older, poorly insulated building, infrared heating will cause high costs because a large part of the heat disappears unused to the outside. If, on the other hand, you live in a well-insulated house with a PV system, infrared heating is even the most efficient heating solution. We will be happy to advise you and together find the best solution for your home.
