What is an undermount basin?

Undercounter basins are not basins designed for undercounter furniture. Unlike built-in basins, which are installed in the furniture or console from above, these are inserted from below. Manufacturers such as GeberitDuravit and Bette offer numerous models. When choosing the complementary furniture, be sure to check whether it is suitable for undermount basins.

What is the difference between an undermount washbasin and a countertop washbasin?

Apart from the installation, the effect of the undermount basin is different. This variant virtually disappears into the undermount washbasin. This makes it look like a straight surface, which makes for a very tidy look. The countertop version always protrudes a little above the top and is therefore visible. The two models also differ in terms of cleaning. Undercounter basins in particular are easy to clean, as dirt has no surface to attack and the quasi-surrounding top can be cleaned in one "wipe".

The choice of material

To ensure that you can enjoy your undermount basin for a long time, it is important to use high-quality materials. As a rule, the customer can therefore choose between the following materials, all of which have proven their worth:

  • Steel enamel
  • Sanitary ceramics
  • Stainless steel

What shape should the pool have?

The undermount basin should integrate perfectly into the bathroom. Therefore, the shape of the basin should also be adapted to the overall bathroom design. If the entire bathroom is characterised by a clear, modern style, it usually makes sense to choose an angular model. If soft contours run gently through the entire bathroom, round or oval washbasins work best. A basic distinction can be made between the following three standard shapes:

  • oval
  • round
  • angular

Water basin with or without tap hole?

The question of whether the undermount basin should have tap holes is a matter of personal taste. Depending on the ambience of the bathroom as a whole, wall-mounted taps can work just as well as taps attached to the basin. It is also important to consider how the water inlets are currently aligned.
